The Birthplace of the Blues

Wednesday, April 8, 2009 - Blues Road Trip, Week 1: M-I-S-S-I ...

Throughout the month of April, we'll be traveling to different regions that have traditionally been hotbeds of the blues, exploring fundamental differences in the sounds and styles in each place. For our first installment, it was only fitting that we devote an entire episode to the birthplace of the blues: none other than the great state of Mississippi. Tonight was a solid mix of powerful but refined acoustic playing from the Delta and raw, animal energy from the North Mississippi Hill Country juke players. What a fun way to get things started.

As a disclaimer, bear in mind that while we preferred requests to fall in line with our theme, we would happily take requests for artists from anywhere. Here's the set:

Wednesday, March 11, 2009 - Women's History Month Celebration, Week 1

This needs no explaining ... March is Women's History Month. We love the ladies. Therefore, we play only female artists all month. Two and two, y'know? I have to shout out this amazing box set Johnny and I dug up called The Blues Women Anthology ... it's a whopping nine discs, featuring all the classic ladies you know, some you don't, some from here, some from there. It's great, so all selections are from that unless otherwise noted.

Also, I have to give a shout to our boy Jason from StoneRider (who we've all come to know and love here at the 'Roads) for offering us our first official Crossroads-specific drop. We can't officially give our opinions about bands on the air, but I personally love the music these dudes make, and you as ATLiens are all fortunate - they're locals.
