Throughout the month of April, we'll be traveling to different regions that have traditionally been hotbeds of the blues, exploring fundamental differences in the sounds and styles in each place. For our first installment, it was only fitting that we devote an entire episode to the birthplace of the blues: none other than the great state of Mississippi. Tonight was a solid mix of powerful but refined acoustic playing from the Delta and raw, animal energy from the North Mississippi Hill Country juke players. What a fun way to get things started.

Wednesday, December 10, 2008 - Celebrating Chess Records

So last Friday, a little ol' movie about a little ol' label that played some little ol' soul blues came out in theaters ... and they called it Cadillac Records. (The actual label, of course, is the world-famous Chess Records). Since opportunities like this don't arise very often (meaning ever), we decided to celebrate the occasion (as we have a way of doing). We picked up a copy of the soundtrack and played it more or less in its entirety - hopefully you were able to catch it. Cadillac Records is in theaters now - go check it out and enjoy an education in the finest in 50's and 60's blues! Well, that and the ever-beautiful Beyoncé Knowles flexing her vocal muscle in what was likely one of the most daunting roles to undertake in cinematic history (other than Jesus, James Bond, or Johnny Cash) - the legendary Etta James.

At a time like finals week, a guy like me sure does question why people break their backs for a college degree. They sure don't make it easy ... ha. I'm not complaining, though. College has been the greatest time of my entire life. And to be honest, I wasn't particularly looking forward to driving to and from the studio after back-to-back-to-back-to-back sleepless nights, but as you do time and time again, you guys absolutely made it exciting to be there. As soon as I step in the studio, my cares, my stresses, and my responsibilities just vanish, even if only for that sweet, fleeting moment. We were on the phone during just about the whole show, it seemed like, and those calls made this one of my favorite nights to date. Thank you so much for the kind words, Hot'Lanta - they go miles and miles and miles. I swear, man, Johnny and I are living the dream - this job is awesome.

Wednesday, November 26, 2008 - Pleased To Meet You ... Won't You Guess My Name?

This past Saturday night I had the distinct privilege of sitting down with Eagles of Death Metal frontman (and boogie extraordinaire) Jesse "Boots Electric" Hughes. Now, this guy has a lot of nicknames - and a reputation that certainly precedes him ... look him up - but perhaps the most persistent one is "The Devil" (though for a guy with such an evil nickname, he sure is nice).

Mr. Hughes, whose earliest nickname in rock 'n roll was, in fact, "The Devil," offered phenomenal insight into the importance of the blues during the course of our interview. It was certainly a privilege to enjoy the company of a fellow bluesman, especially one who spreads the gospel at many a crossroads. He even went so far as to quip, when asked what he pictured himself doing in thirty years, that he intends to still be rockin' because he "hope[s] [he] made the right deal with the Devil." Rock 'n roll star or not, Jesse Hughes is either one of the genuinely nicest people I've ever met in my entire life or wears the finest dramatis personæ to which I have ever born witness. In addition, he and the boys in Eagles of Death Metal put on a tremendous, razor-sharp ninety minutes of rock 'n roll done right, stopping between songs only to laud the audience and lean down and kiss girls on the mouth, and even covering the Stones' "Brown Sugar" (which became funny during the interview, as Hughes, a self-admitted "Rolling Stones fanatic," detailed how he, when writing EoDM tunes, was "ripping off Keith Richards harder than Keith Richards"). The conversation went far beyond standard interview fare - we discussed politics, women, family, our mothers, his famous friends, the new Harvey Milk record, life on the road, Dixie, having kids, politics, and the illustrious Claremont Lounge, which he and his bandmates then went onward to frequent. He was charming, eloquent, energetic, and inviting, and I suggest you all go out and buy his new record Heart On because it rules. I'm not getting paid to say any of this, as a disclaimer - I'm a huge fan of the band and I even went so far as to get Jesse to sign my copy of their 2004 debut Peace Love Death Metal (a record from which we've played a number of tracks).

Well, in the spirit of all that electricity, and in spite of the holiday season being upon us, I decided to dedicate a whole show to perhaps the most notorious character in the history of music - the Devil. You know, that guy everyone loves to hate. Now don't get all "People v. Marilyn Manson (Circa 1997)" on me ... in no way do we condone Satanism. Don't call up the fine people at WRAS and tell them about the Satanist propaganda being blasted over the airwaves. Instead, try not being an idiot.

After two insanely huge weeks, it was pretty nice to kick back and just relax a little bit. Most of the selections fared pretty well in that department, and made for great ambiance while reading. I love being in the studio, no matter how tired I am. School is really grinding away at Johnny and I (as much as or more so than we're grinding away at it), so it's as good a thing as any, as good friends, to be able to sit still for a fixed two hours every single week and stay caught up - you know, get our feet under us a little bit. The great irony of technology is that, in being something man has created to be perfect, it is naturally full of flaws. I suppose that, too, is the irony of logic. Nevertheless, technology's demons reared their ugly heads on us last night and we had to roll with the punches. I honestly wish we could share with you all the magic we experience while in the studio. It's always a rollicking good time just between the two of us bantering, playing air guitar, and bemoaning the fact that we haven't slept in four days, but the addition of friends, fellow WRAScals, and callers aplenty (some odder than others) all combine for an absolutely, insatiably joyful time to be had by all, especially Johnny and I. The aforementioned quote is from Pappy Mahan, a regular caller and extended member of our 'Roads family. We were so delirious by the time he called that I laughed (hysterically) at his (highly quotable) antics. His call was one among many that we received last night - the phone was ringing off the hook with requests (some of which I have yet to fill amidst all our scrambling, but I will get to) and all sorts of fun, friendliness, and conversation. I said it after our first show and it still holds true: the communal experience here is absolutely unparalleled. The Crossroads and WRAS communities are truly, truly something to behold. That said, thank you again, and I can't wait for next week. I know Johnny feels the same ... I just hope he survives his grueling schedule. It's a tough life when you're Blind John Johnson. Wednesday, September 10, 2008 - The One With a Mini-Ode to T-Bone

So here's the scene: Johnny and I are sitting around at the studio, set long-since prepared, unwinding after a long day of backbreaking labor (read: class), and enjoying the company of Mrs. Scarlett O'Sara of Cowtipper's Delight. The phone in the studio rings, and whose voice do I hear on the other end of the line? None other than my brother T-Bone Roane (also of Tha Bomb fame), who rang the station in order to inform me that he "got the blues." My delight soon sank into dismay as I realized it wasn't the good kind - heartbreak of some kind had befallen him. T-Bone being family, I thought it necessary to try to lift his spirits by dedicating the entire first set to him, so, with the exception of this week's Cliff's Pick "Heartbreaker" (as ironically fitting as that may have been), everything up to the first break is dedicated to the legendary - the one and only - T-Bone. Wednesday, August 27, 2008 - B.B. King's One Kind Favor Album Release Celebration

This show was probably my favorite so far ... B.B. King is a mutual favorite of Johnny's and mine, so it only made sense to celebrate his first studio release since 2000's Riding With the King (to my knowledge, anyway, and not counting 80, the duets album released in 2005 to commemorate the King's 80th birthday). Once I heard B.B. was releasing a new album, I was chomping at the bit. Then I read that T-Bone Burnett was at the helm of this record ... and there was no question I was getting it. And to top all that off, it was a record that was going to try and capture that raw, undeniable, early 50's B.B. vibe? Come on. You'd have to be a fool not to want it. I stayed up until midnight on Monday night and bought it the second the iTunes store refreshed and it became available. See? We're fans first here at the Crossroads. The show turned out to be such a blast, and everyone seemed to really enjoy having an evening with the King as much as we did ... which makes me smile. Even Ms. Scarlett O'Sara of Cowtipper's Delight (the show on before ours) graciously drew the curtain on her show thirty minutes early so as to allow us extra time, which certainly gave a more "King-size" vibe to the evening. So when you see "Fourth Break," it's not a typo - the evening was truly that special, running from 11:30 (instead of the usual midnight) until 2.

[Disclaimer: THIS HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE BLUES.]

As you may know, the shift after ours is what we call the "graveyard shift": four hours (2-6 AM) of regular rotation music manned by one of the newbies at the stations (who we have very cleverly dubbed "graveyarders"). Long story short, the graveyarder after us was going out of town and no one could cover for him, so I offered to stay, the reason being this: any veteran (i.e. non-graveyarder) DJ who covers a graveyard shift can use it as an opportunity to "free-form;" that is, play whatever he or she wants, more or less. So, armed to the teeth with vinyl and my iPod, I did just that. For those of you who stayed with me midnight to six, I truly appreciate it. Driving home as the sun came up was quite an experience. What's going on, people of Atlanta? My apologies for such a belated response. As you may have heard from myself or my radio partner in crime, I hit the dusty road a bit early. Right now, I'm four weeks into my summer here in the nation's capital.

As much as I miss everyone back in Georgia (most especially you Crossroads fans of Album 88), I'm having the time of my life here. D.C. is a great city to be in...for more than a few days of sightseeing. There is so much do, yet so little time. Although it took me a while to get settled in, due to confusing housing arrangements, I think I'm doing just fine.

You may be wondering, "Why is Blind John Johnson in another city for 8 weeks? Atlanta is perfectly fine. Plus, you can't really see all the monuments and landmarks." Well, I don't want to bug everyone out with details and such, but long story short - I got accepted into this journalism program at The George Washington University. It's this large private school right smack dab in the middle (ok, so northwest, really) of D.C....situated fairly similar to Georgia State. It's a nice place, but damn, is it expensive. Talk about 10% tax.

Anyways, I'm taking a class on Washington journalism, doing lots of projects, meeting the big names in telecommunications, networking like crazy, AND interning at XM Satellite Radio. Let me tell you - working at such a rather new and innovative communications company is pretty sweet. From the hands-on experience, to the laid-back attitude, I do look forward to coming to my desk and working four days a week. The perks are sweet too. I think I'm going to go sweet talk my way into getting some good blues tunes from the good folks over at Bluesville (XM Channel 74, for you satellite radio listeners out there) to bring back to the ATL. And I can't wait for another live performance...although I've missed most of them so far. Foreigner came in the day before I started and I heard that was an awesome performance.

Well, I want to keep this one rather short and sweet, as compared to my other posts. I just wanted to write a lil' somethin' so all of ya'll would know that I'm still truckin' along. Shoeless has thrown a list of record stores my way to beef up my collection (now that I have a record player!) No luck so far...the downtown sector of Georgetown was a letdown.

Now, it's off to Adams Morgan, which by the way, has a sweet blues following, besides U Street. Actually, the first place I went to drink on my 21st birthday WAS a blues bar! Madams Organ (promotional billboard/sign/painting displayed above) was a rather pleasant beginning to my night. Three floors of good food, good music, and good drinks. I got carded and was greeted to the humbling sounds of a blues band playing "Sweet Home Alabama"...the band's name has escaped my mind, unfortunately. They had a gnarly looking bass player.

The District is the place to be - late nights on the rooftop, muggy afternoons walking around, and the hint of summer love in the air. But I guess the last one applies to anyone or anywhere, really. I'll be back in the Peach State on July 26th, and back in the station, doing my thing with Shoeless on the night/morning of the 29th. Get ready - I too have a few themed sets coming up - one that is based off of a public TV series...yeah.

I have to be honest - I was not particularly excited come studio time this week. Call it a funk, call it what you will, but it's just been one of those weeks where the gray was sort of lurking omnipresently. Regardless, the Crossroads always manages to come through for me somehow, and this week was no exception. After our first show, I noted the power of the communal experience, and how powerful in particular the Crossroads community truly is. I am positive that this is what made the show for me. My mom even stayed up for the show, which, I have to admit, made me really happy. All in all, things did a 180 and ended up awesome. After the pure gravity of last week's tribute, I thought it best to just lighten the mood. The blues are heavy enough, and besides, it's the summer of love here in Hot'Lanta ... Wednesday, June 4, 2008 - A Tribute To Bo Diddley

This week, we lost an absolute legend. Mr. Bo Diddley, surrounded by the love and warmth of about thirty-five of his closest family members, passed away on Monday at his home in Archer, Florida. I had a set totally prepared for this week, but I had to push it back, as it was more important to honor the memory of a man who had done as much for the blues and rock 'n roll as Elvis, Chuck Berry, or anyone else. Bo was, is, and always will be the man (he even has a song to prove it!), and he deserved all the reverence I could possibly offer. Therefore, I put together, albeit hastily, an impromptu tribute to the man who had given us so much. I had well over two hours of music ready to roll for the show, but halfway in, listening to the voice and guitar that was now echoing from beyond the grave got to be way too heavy, so I pulled it and just closed the night out with some random jams from vinyl I had on hand. So here's the story, short version: Blind Johnny's spending the summer in Washington, D.C. on business, so he and I knocked out a few shows before he left. Johnny ended up having to hop on an earlier leavin' train than he originally thought, so after putting together a killer set (the first one he's done entirely by himself), he didn't even get to be at the helm to see his baby come to fruition. First, in the tradition of my being a fan of collectives and revolving-door collaborations, I want to introduce another bluesman who'll be coming into the fold and hangin' around from time to time, "Chillin'" Willie James Chill. He's done a great job already in Blind's absence, and I look forward to his continued impact. Great and different things come from great and different minds. In no way did we want to fall in to the death trap of the subjectivity of a countdown, or even try to label someone as "the best." Taking a Walk on the Dark Side

As Shoeless mentioned at the end of his post, I, the Blind (not truly blind) John Johnson would be leaving some after-show thoughts. Although my partner in crime left a very detailed story of our first show, I'll do my best to add my two cents here and there...

I must say that I am still a bit shocked as to how we pulled this off. Your new Crossroads hosts are fairly new to the radio world...I got my spot as a DJ on WRAS back in January, while Kay Staps started in March. But I believe it was our dedication (not to mention our affinity for public speaking) that helped us keep this show rollin' that was brought back by popular demand.

When Mr. Steadman asked me straight up "You think you're going to be ready to take over in a few weeks," I replied with a hurried but positive "YES." We had been sitting in on his show for a few weeks and graduation was right around the corner for Matt. Shoeless and I had been passed the mighty power that the blues contains...now it was just time to come up with a plan.

Seeing as Kay Staps had a bit of a head-start on me on the background in blues (give or take a few years...), I needed to do my homework. And damn, did research help. From reading online blogs, to historical features, to books analyzing rock, blues, and how they all came to be, it was a matter of being prepared for the show. (For the record, I recommend Take a Walk on the Dark Side: Rock and Roll Myths, Legends, and Curses by R. Gary Patterson. The work itself is a tremendous compilation discussing the eerie side in the world of rock and roll.)

Then it was time to make the setlist. I must admit - even after we chose our direction on how to run the show, choosing the songs was quite an arduous task. Who should we focus on? Who are we forgetting? What songs are worthy of radio play. Equipped with hard drives large enough to hold enough music to supply Crossroads for the next five years, it was a matter of trial and error.

For instance, most blues songs in general are rather short. Short and sweet. Like 2-4 minutes, unless it was a live or improvised track, so there was the though of beefing up the playlist to be on the safe side. And as we learned, in between the calls and the breaks, you can never have too much music for a specialty show.

After a few hours of reviewing music and listing possible tracks to play for the night, Shoeless and I worked out the breaks and such. We worked out all the kinks, and then it was go-time...as soon as our playing materials worked themselves out. Alas, all was good and well - we ran a good amount of the songs from a IPod, but not to worry. We had our fair share of vinyl to use (especially The Allman Brothers Band - Live at the Fillmore East...).

I won't go much into the setlist, since that's been covered, but I will say this. The "freedom" of running a specialty show, especially Crossroads, is fully expressed in the enjoyment of ad-libbing during breaks and enjoying the beautiful music pouring out over the speakers and onto the airwaves. As I learn more about the blues that night, I noticed that my apprehension for the genre lessened more and more. I guess I was wrapped up in knowing all these albums (and some artists, of course). In the end, I just got a better feel for the music and how it connected to my life and others. We're all going to go through hard times. Plain and simple. I gotta tip my hat (if I can find it) to Papa Mahan for his own personal and heartfelt blues story of his life. There's someone who understands the blues all too well.

Music aside, talking on-air created great euphoria for me. I have been off of the graveyard (2-6AM) shift for a good minute - at least since mid-March, when my co-host of this fine show relieved me of my nocturnal duties. Classes kept me from supplying the good people of Atlanta with music for two hours a week, during the daytime. Tuesday night was my return and oh, was it a return indeed. There are many good things to come of this show. Now, it's on to coming up with next Tuesday's set...the work never stops.

Hope my post didn't seem too much of a ramble. But for the future, like Shoeless also said, we'd love to hear from the fans! Any ideas on what themes we should use to formulate shows, suggestions for artists or songs, or even small segments would be greatly appreciated.

In the coming weeks, we'll be working on adding more to this blog. I'll post some blues-related videos, news, and whatever media I may find relating to Crossrads. Even though I'll be away in D.C. for an internship, missing about 8 shows, you'll still hear from me, whether it be on the blog or a call I make to Shoeless in the studio.

Blues 101 [Our First Show!]

Wednesday, May 14, 2008 - First Show!!! / "Blues 101"

For our first-ever set, we decided to keep it pretty simple. We didn't want to overextend ourselves or pretend we're ready to flex our muscles with this, so we decided to fall back on the same thing students always fall back on - the five-paragraph essay. That's right ... intro, three body paragraphs, and a conclusion (which we decided to leave alone, because this is only the beginning). For the first "paragraph," we wanted to briefly introduce ourselves with some of our personal favorites in a fairly representative sample of what we want to play. Following that, we wanted to start things right: on a front porch somewhere in the Delta or along the bayou (and, more specifically, Mooringsport, Louisiana, since we started the set with Leadbelly). The set consisted of the kind of music that Alan Lomax scoured the deep South looking to record with his Library of Congress equipment. Thank the sweet Lord he did. With the next set, we wanted to "plug in" and sit down at the front table of the dark, sweaty, smoky, one-room jook joint, next to the sweet, sultry, smoking amps of mid-twentieth-century electric blues powerhouses such as T-Bone Walker and Buddy Guy. Finally, we wanted to end our "lesson" with a nod to the worshippers at the Clarksdale throne - whiskey-bent rock-n-rollers that have knelt at the crossroads from the seventies until now, giving the blues a lean, raw, muscular shot of life in a world that's nearly forgotten where it's come from.

Drew, The DJ who comes in after us, asked if we had any songs left over, and we answered with a resounding "YES." We ended up having to cut between fifteen and twenty songs of our own music, and didn't even get to one of the requests we had (which, by the way, if you're reading this and you ever figure out which Elvis song you wanted to hear, let me know. I spent forty-five minutes poring over every charted hit to Elvis Presley's name, to no avail). Filling requests was awesome, but one of the first lessons learned (other than "be prepared for anything") was that (a) it's better to have too much than not enough, but (b) it's good to have a specific contingency plan in face of time restrictions. We were well-prepared, but we can only do better. Enough behind-the-scenes; what I really want to say is this:

I absolutely cannot thank you guys enough for the outpouring of love last night, especially with all the phone calls. We knew going in what huge shoes we had to fill (this show was brought back by popular demand, after all ... people have high expectations). Special shout-outs are definitely due to Milo and Papa Mahan for all their support - of us, of Crossroads, and of 88 in general. Also, thanks are due to Dr. John Huston, who reignited my long-lost love of the blues with a simple, lo-fi Jack White interpretation of Robert Johnson's "Stop Breaking Down Blues." Taking Dr. Huston's Intro to Guitar class was one of the best academic decisions I have ever made ... it has forever changed my approach as a listener and lover of music. I hear and feel it differently now. Most importantly, though, thanks are due to Ten Gallon Matt. We are truly standing on the shoulder of a giant following your lead, and I can only hope that we do half the job you've done. It was such a blast getting to know you as we made our way to this point (this crossroads ... ?). Come back and visit often, and bring your beard.

Last night was one of the most intense communal and musical experiences of my life, and it let me know beyond a shadow of a doubt that I'm where I'm supposed to be right now. I was on a high for hours after leaving the studio, and didn't get a lot of sleep last night. I got to share some of my all-time favorite songs, songs I've held dear to my heart for years, with everyone for miles and miles who cared to listen. Music and people - there are hardly any greater things to me.
